The CW 75 Index fell less than 1% for the week ending September 2, slightly lagging broader market indexes including the Morgan Stanley global composite and the Standard & Poor’s 500. Basic chemical shares fell 6%, while diversified and specialty chemical stocks rose by about 1%. The stock market improved because of falling oil prices.

Bank of America (BoA; New York) favors “shares with significant specialty content,” says Kevin McCarthy, BoA analyst. “We remain cautious on commodity petrochemical producers given prospects of supply-driven cyclical decline and deceleration of demand,” McCarthy says. He warns that the strengthening U.S. dollar may result in slower earnings growth for U.S. firms with a high percentage of sales derived outside the U.S.

Forty-six stocks listed in the CW 75 rose, while 26 fell. ATMI, Shin Etsu, and Westlake Chemical were flat.
