Firms to invest $4 Billion in
Brazilian ethanol by 2013

Severalcompanieshaverecentlyannounced Bioenergía (São Paulo) says it will spend R6 investments totaling about $4 billion in billion ($3.3 billion) to build 10 greenfield sugar cane-to-ethanol v entures in Brazil, sugar cane-to-ethanol mills in Brazil by 2013. including a joint venture of Bunge The mills will process 8 million m.t. and Itochu to spend $800 million of sugar cane by next year, and the on two plants. Itochu will invest company expects to be able to process to expand Bunge’s mill at Santa 50 million m.t. by 2015, CEO José Juliana in Brazil’s Minas Gerais Carlos Grubisich tells CW. state from 1. 6 million m.t./year, Sugar cane-derived ethanol can to 4. 2 million m.t./year by 2011, be produced at about one-third the the companies say. The jv also cost of corn-based ethanol, a factor plans to build a greenfield etha- that has driven Brazil-based ethanol nol mill, but it did not provide Grubisich: Huge investments, executives say. Brazil’s details on its location, capacity, market potential. domestic ethanol market is forecast to or anticipated startup. Itochu will take a 20% reach 23 billion liters in 2008, up 40% from stake in both projects, with Bunge taking the 2007, Grubisich says. Emerging technologies remaining share. that are promising for sugar-derived ethanol Separately, sugar and ethanol firm ETH include a process for converting sugar cane

juice into biodiesel, and another for converting sugar cane into butanol, he says.

The ETH plants will be fully automated and not as dependent on labor costs as less modernized plants, Grubisich says. The waste pulp from sugar cane mills, bagasse, will be used to produce bio-electricity, he says. Waste from sugar cane processing will also be used as an environmentally friendly fertilizer for sugar cane crops, he adds.

Grubisich, who until recently headed Brazil’s biggest petrochemical company Braskem (São Paulo), says he will work to position ETH to be the preferred supplier for Braskem’s “green” polyethylene plant to be built at Triunfo by 2012 (CW, June 27, 2007, p. 9). ETH and Braskem have the same majority shareholder, the Odebrecht Group (São Paulo).

Brazil has attracted several other ethanol-based chemical projects, including Dow’s plans for a polyethyelene (PE) jv with local ethanol producer Crystalsev (São Paulo). The plant will produce 350,000-m.t./year of linear low-density PE resin by 2011. —kara sissell
